Also, since ADL can actually change the resulting exposure, be sure to turn it off in camera if doing a DNG workflow.Īnother thing folks often forget, because all changes are written into the DNG file, you would have to back up the entire DNG file every time you make changes to it. May not matter to many but it is a tool you can no longer use (With DNG you will be limited to Adobe presets instead). ) to the RAW file so you can't really match the original embedded JPG or start from a point that matches what was first displayed on the Camera rear LCD. With DNG you lose the ability to apply the Nikon Picture Control instructions (Neutral, Standard, Vivid, etc. What picture controls are you referring to? I have not noticed any loss of control when editing with PhotoShop.ĭNG strips out some of the unrecognized meta data (such as Active D-Lighting and Picture Control) from RAW files, making it impossible to retrieve this data from DNG in the future. ViewNX2 is free and can be used to go to TIFF. Another option might be to convert to TIFF for editing and keep the NEF for max flexibility in the future. When you convert NEF's to DNG you lose all the Nikon instructions like Picture Controls and ADL. This means I can then put all my pictures in a single folder without having to change names to make them all fit.Īnd yes, DNG is the same as any other RAW file it is just an open format so Adobe can make use of it. I have mine rename them to be the date plus a number. It works great and it does all the files in a folder as a batch, plus it gives the option of renaming them as well. I have also downloaded the latest version of Adobe DNG Converter from the Adobe website.Ĭan someone advise me on which is the best option to use to convert files from NEF to DNG?Īlso, can someone advise if DNG files still give you the full editing power as NEF files do? I've read on numerous forum discussions about the above mentioned, but there are several queries I wish to ask fellow posters!Īs I say I have Lightroom 3 but have noticed, when I import files to the catalog, it gives me the option of 'Copy as DNG' (which will convert the NEF file to DNG in a new location and add to catalog). My PC runs Windows Vista with service pack 2, so upgrading software is not an option at present! I can't upgrade the software to Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CS6 as the system requirements to run these softwares, require you to use Windows 7 or 8. I was using Adobe Lightroom 3 and Adobe Photoshop CS5 for my image editing software for the D80, but now I can't use the mentioned above software for the D7100, because the NEF files are not supported for the D7100 on either software, and also Adobe has stopped doing software updates for Lightroom 3 and Photoshop CS5. I recently upgraded my dslr from the D80 to the D7100.
